Melbourne-based architecture and interiors practice Akehurst Owen Cimino has opened its first Sydney studio, responding to growing demand across New South Wales and an expanding national portfolio of bespoke residential projects.

One of Melbourne’s most respected residential architecture practices has planted its flag in Sydney, as clients across the country increasingly choose architects on the strength of their design vision rather than their postcode.

Akehurst Owen Cimino has opened its first Sydney studio, marking a significant step in the practice’s growth as it responds to rising demand across New South Wales. Led by partners Stephen Akehurst, Sebastian Owen, and Marco Cimino, the practice has built its reputation on designing timeless legacy homes that bring together classical architectural principles and the demands of contemporary living.

While the practice is firmly rooted in Melbourne, a steady stream of commissions has drawn the team to Sydney, the Southern Highlands, the Hunter Valley, and other sought-after regional destinations across New South Wales. A permanent Sydney presence formalises what has long been a growing part of the practice’s work.

The new studio positions Akehurst Owen Cimino to work more directly with clients, consultants, and builders across the state, while strengthening its capacity to deliver projects at a national scale. It reflects a broader shift in Australia’s luxury residential market, where geography matters less and design philosophy matters more.

A practice built on endurance

Akehurst Owen Cimino works across city, coastal, and country settings, with each project shaped by its landscape, climate, and context. The portfolio spans bespoke private residences, country estates, equestrian and recreational projects, townhouses, and apartments, held together by a shared commitment to craftsmanship, considered detailing, and architecture designed to endure for generations.

Founder Stephen Akehurst brings more than three decades of experience to the practice and is recognised as one of Australia’s most respected residential architects. Alongside Owen and Cimino, the practice has developed a collaborative design approach that integrates architecture, interiors, and landscape into cohesive homes built around the way people live.

The Sydney studio opens as the practice looks to continue expanding its national footprint, delivering highly considered residential projects across metropolitan, coastal, and regional Australia.
